Clarenville Dragway – Racing Results for October Final Race
We had our final event for 2009 this past weekend. Saturday stared a little wet but it did dry up but it was very cold. We did get our Gamblers race in with Bobby Maddigan taking the win over Jim Powell, there was a bit of movement in the final points order with Bobby Maddigan win his win taking 1st place from Con Dunphy who had held it all season. Gamblers pot on Saturday was $1,250. Sunday started out very wet and it was simply to cold for the track to dry. The sun did eventually come out but it was too late to get in our Sunday program. All in all another successful season and planning for 2010 has already started.

Turkey Trots End Raceway Park 2009 Season

The final drag racing event of the season took place over the long weekend. The Turkey Trot Nationals on Thanksgiving weekend traditionally mark the end of drag racing at the local track. This year there was a little twist; it was so wet on Saturday that the Gamblers’ races were moved to Monday.

On Sunday five classes were run, an Electronic class, a Non-electronic class, a Duck Race for first round losers, a Junior Dragster class and a Junior Duck race.

A few non-electronic car owners paid a double entry fee and entered both classes in hopes of upsetting the electronically equipped cars. One such car, that of Bruce Howatt of Charlottetown, managed to achieve that feat by edging Dartmouth, Nova Scotia’s Bunny Allen in the final round of racing. Cody Hobart from Grand Bay-Westfield, New Brunswick defeated Moncton’s Jason Freeman in a run-off for third.

In the Non-electronic class the same Bunny Allen managed to cap off a great weekend of racing by defeating Michael Comeau from Neguac, New Brunswick in the final. New Glasgow, PEI’s Luke MacKay captured third in the field of 51 vehicles by defeating Charlottetown’s Ray Smith in a run-off for third.

Wellington’s Chad Ramsay defeated Vaughan Boone from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to capture the Duck Race honours.

In Junior Dragster action, Brett Ramsay continued the Ramsay winning ways by edging Chris Hobart from Grand Bay-Westfield in the final pairing. Brendon Smith from Windsor, Nova Scotia finished third.

Tyne Valley’s William Newcombe won the Junior Duck race when he defeated Guysborough, Nova Scotia’s Breanna O’Handley in the final round.Monday’s Gambler’s race was won by Kandy Mitton from Sussex, New Brunswick when she defeated Oyster Bed Bridge racer, Jody Gallant. Vaughan Boone from Dartmouth won the Duck Race by defeating Luke MacKay.

On Saturday night, prizes and trophies for the year’s points races were awarded at a gathering at the North Winds Motel. The winners are listed below.

Greenfield Dragway
Oct 3 Report
by Mitch Bonnar
When the curtain fell Saturday evening we had put nearly 1200 passes down the track for the day but unfortunately we were left with 23 vehicles and 4 Jr Dragster winners. And 235 in the Gamblers race along with the Team race becomes a bit of a challenge.
It was not all bad since Greenfield added a bit to the pot and paid out each of the 23 a crisp $100.00 and each of the 4 $20.00. That seemed to help the pain a touch.
This ends the Greenfield season and points series. Mr. Decker will be posting the Final Points Standings.
Please don't forget to attend the NSDRA banquet in Liverpool on Nov 14. Get your tickets early and reserve your $99 room in the Brand New Hotel. Last year was attended by 110 plus and all had a great time. This year should be even better.
We sold 70+ DVD's of Smoke and Thunder. It's Halifax opening packed the house. We still have a few left so contact us to get yours for only $15.00. Cool Video and a keepsake.
We are good sports so we had a quick meeting and by a narrow margin, even though they thrashed hell out of us, it was decided that we would even invite Team PEI.
Whereas we did not get to race Sunday due to rain we will be offering discount for our first race of 2010 in Greenfield. We know who you are andwe will have the list at the gate in the spring
All vehicles entries that we have a completed Tech card for the Sunday event win a discount for their vehicle / driver entry fee at our NEXTscheduled event. The discount is as follows:
S/P $30    Reduction
Pro $25    Reduction
SM $20     Reduction
B/S $20    Reduction
Jr.D's $10 Reduction

Thanks again to all our membership, racers, sponsors, fans and volunteers.
We could not do this without you. We will continue to improve the experience and track facilities for YOU.

It's going to be a long winter so see you at the NSDRA Banquet.

Clarenville Dragway – Racing Results for September 27th and 28th

For those who were seeking peek performance this weekend had it. Cool but very dry weather brought out many personal best runs over the course of a very busy weekend. Starting line bite was outstanding as well with a best ever 60’ recorded at our raceway of 1.01. Only one cleanup of note occurred when Paul Power in his Avenger had a motor expire about 100’ out, quick action by Paul to pull out of the grove saved what could have been a long delay. We also had for the first time in awhile a great turnout of bikes on Sunday and a gamblers race was organized for those folks. Sundays winner of Super Pro Willie Brewer finally put everything together and pulled out a long deserved win, if anyone deserves a medal for perseverance it would have to be Willie,

The points have certainly tightened up and positions could certainly change during our final event October 10th & 11th.

Sept 5-6 Report by Earl Proude
The promise of good weather and the lure of a combined points meet brought a record number of racers to Raceway Park drag strip over the long weekend.

It was the final points event for the local track and the sixth for the Atlantic Drag Racing Association.

Eighty Super Pro cars registered for weekend racing and seventy-six of them qualified for Sunday’s eliminations. After six rounds, Darryl Stewart from Bridgewater, NS edged his 1969 Pontiac Beaumont up to the starting line beside the Camaro of Charlottetown’s Dave Constable.

When the tree came down Constable jumped to a slight lead because of a .523 reaction time to Stewart’s .552; however, just before the finish line the Beaumont edged past the Camaro giving Stewart a hard earned victory in such a large field of cars. The big Plymouth Road Runner of Richard Boyd from Belleisle Creek, NB took third in the class.

Local racer, Jody Gallant, from Oyster Bed Bridge almost pulled off a major upset in the Pro Bracket class. After ousting such notables as Sheldon Casavechia, Vaughan Boone and Bill Sheppard, he came up one short when he lost in the final round to the 1973 Challenger of Greg Gillis from Margaree Harbour, NS. Gallant did have a .519 reaction time and got to the finish line first, but ran 11.918 on his 11.920 dial-in to break out and give the win to Gillis. Bill Sheppard from Lakeview, NS finished third.

The Bike/Sled class also saw a new-comer, Charlottetown’s Luke MacKay, conquer the impressive field of snowmobiles and motorcycles in attendance. In the all-motorcycle final, he defeated Jason MacNeil from Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Mike MacDonald from Oyster Bed Bridge was third in the class.

In the Sportsman class a veteran racer, Richard Leger from Shediac, NB, did come through the masses when his 1980 Pontiac Trans Am edged the 1973 Plymouth of Charlottetown’s Ray Smith in the final. The Chevy S-10 of Riverview, New Brunswick’s Tony Lyons was third in the class.

There were twenty-one Junior Dragsters in attendance on the weekend and they provided some fine entertainment. In Sunday eliminations Nova Scotia racers dominated the class. Brenden Smith from Scotch Village defeated Lisa Carroll from Sherbrooke in the final, while Sydney’s Robbie Chase was third.

On Saturday Chris Hobart from Grand Bay-Westfield, NB edged Berwick, NB native, Rylie Green, in the Junior class while Jocelyn Campbell of Charlottetown was third.

Saturday also saw two huge fields for the two Gamblers’ Races. In the Quick division Jason MacNeil drove his 1979 Chevrolet Monza to victory over Springvale, PEI’s John Aten and his 1968 Camaro. Cody Hobart, a recent graduate from the Junior ranks, made an impressive debut in the class with a third place finish.

In the slower division Chad Ramsay and his 1083 Monte Carlo from Wellington, PEI defeated the 1983 Mustang of Bob Moase from Mahone Bay. Charlottetown’s Danny Birt was third in his 2005 Corvette.
August 22-23  Report by Dave Anthony
As threatening as the weather forecast was we probably enjoyed the best weather of the season, unfortunately the weatherman managed to scare away some of our racers and spectators on Sunday. We didn’t see the wind/rain until around 10pm Sunday night.
We had 2 full days of racing with some very competitive runs and only one boomer, Gord Anthony’s Chevy powered AMC, that as destructive as it was bits of rod, piston and other metal all over the track there was not a bit of oil outside of the pan. Jim Powell enjoyed has first win in Gamblers after many runner ups over the years. Doug Strickland ran a very impressive 8.98 @ 151 in his ’68 Camaro street car running 10.5 street radials coupled with a few low 9 second runs earlier to prove it was no fluke. Looks to be more there yet! David Powell Jr. with his Top Sportsman Cougar in a couple of tune up runs for Epping ran 7.29 @ 190 and 7.30. Track record was reset by Dave Anthony with his dragster with a run of 6.837 @ 198.67.

No point in reinventing the wheel.

Sam SS10 has already posted on Saturday’s events and I can’t tell the story any better so here is his story.  WOW, what a day is all I can say. Cars, cars, cars everywhere, over 200 entries (208 I believe) all for the dash for cash also cannot forget about the 34-degree temps and the 125-130 degree launch pads. Great racing all day, Box and No Box, with it coming down to the final runoff for the title of KING OF THE HILL which gave us Vaughn Boone (No Box winner) and Tommie Vickery (Box winner) to make an all out bragging rights run for an additional $500.00 bucks and when the smoke cleared and the tree dropped Tommie Vickery got the win light and $500.00 smackeroos.
The winners in both classes brought home over $2000.00 each I do believe; I know that Vaughn did for sure.

Racers Appreciation BBQ was a great way to end the day with sausages from M & M Meats of Dartmouth and hotdogs from the local supermarket loll, but one of my favorites that was new this year to the BBQ was CHILI (and it was awesome btw) supplied by Donna Marie's Cut n' Curl (I’m sorry if I didn't get the name right Donna). I really hope that she will do it again... did I mention that it was awesome. That was the time to get a chance to talk to those who you don't get to see that often and to enjoy all the great food.

We also had a super variety of race cars from sportsman through to SuperPro and it was great to see Mike Comeau there with that awesome Yenko Clone, one of my favorite cars to watch because of the fact that it is a 100% street car and runs in the 8's, that is just something to listen to when that spools up in the burnout box.

First .500 Light in Sunday eliminations, sponsored by Mahone Funeral Home was picked up by Glen Frizzell S12 Charlottetown PEI. Congrats to all and I am sure pictures of this event will be posted.
Well that is my rendition of yesterday’s events (from my point of view LOL)... I'm sure someone will post all the prudent info for everyone to see. End of SS10 report Thousands of dollars were in fact passed out to the winners of the bash. Thanks for all the people that traveled great distances to play with us. We really do appreciate it. We need to all congratulate Tommie Vickery for earning the King of the Hill crown. Wear it proudly Tommie till next year. I can assure you there will be lots of your “friends” that will be looking to snatch it off your head.      Sunday was another scorcher but with a little breeze. Give or take I saw 39C or 103F at one point. No rain, just perfect. The day went along without a hitch. Linda Neal laid down an 8.00 flat then later in the day the long sought after 7.99. Congrats to both her and Pat. It is always a pleasure. How about that young man Cody Hobart. He is kicking butt with his new ride. See detail below. A new entry this week was the Legends car #42 of Randy Francis. He and his wife quickly made friends and I am sure they will be back for the next race. It had the wrong rear gear which caused it to hit the 10500RPM rev limiter at about 900 feet but still was able to lay down a 13.63 @ 93MPH. With a little higher gear it will be a performer.   The new return road has shaved off more than 15 seconds per run. It even has an area to pull the dragsters over and pick up the chute without interfering with other cars. Now, when we need to, we can ship them at an interval that would rival any professional track.  Just carefully and slowly working into a grove we were able to put the 217 entries for the weekend down the track with 1850 passes and we completed Sunday’s events at approx 5:00 PM. Obviously the racers played a big part in this by showing up when called to the staging lanes when called even with the slightly elevated temperatures of the weekend. It takes a combined effort to make it all come together. Kudos to all the volunteer staff, racers and fans that stood out there all day in the sweltering heat. Not one passed out that I am aware of but I will tell you the staff bottled drinking water supply took a licking. Loll Teardown was a 1-hour snap with all the help, again thanks to all for all you people do for our track. We couldn’t do it without you. Hope to see many more of you racers for our last one of the year on Oct 3-4th. It should be a hum dinger being the last ADRA event of the year as well as the weekend of the ADRA track teams challenge.  The list of winners are as follows:

Siblings face off for Drag Race Honours

Late Sunday afternoon 16 year old Jason Freeman from Moncton, NB defeated Jill, his 19 year old sister, to become the youngest driver to win Super Pro top-eliminator honours at Raceway Park.

With two proud parents looking on, the pair of rear-engine dragsters approached the starting line. Jason had a .526 reaction time and ran 9.16 on a 9.15 dial-in at 145 mph. Jill had a .548 reaction time and ran 8.16 at 160 mph. She actually got to the finish line first but broke out because of her 8.19 dial-in, handing victory to her younger brother. It was quite a day for the Freeman family and the many interested racers and fans who were watching. Brian Keith from Riverview, NB was third in his 1989 Ford Mustang.

It was the third event in the local track’s points series and a large field of very competitive cars were assembled, especially Super Pro and Pro cars. All competitors were pleased to see the return of the only functional score boards in Atlantic Canada.

In the Pro Bracket class, Vaughan Boone, from Dartmouth, NS  drove one of his two AMX entries to victory over runner-up Fred Fudge from Waterford, NB in his 1972 Dodge Demon. Bill Campbell from Moncton defeated Randy Langille to take third place in the class.

In the Bike/Sled class, two racers who seem to fight it out annually for the points title,  met once again in the final. This time Steve Campbell from Cornwall, PEI had a .511 reaction time and ran 8.67 at 130 mph to narrowly defeat Glenn Frizzell from Winsloe, PEI on his Arctic Cat snowmobile. Joey McInnis from Mt. Stewart, PEI garnered third place by defeating Summerside’s Dave Wooldridge.

After experiencing problems with his Super Pro Camaro, Charles “Chick” Coughlin borrowed a tow vehicle from Todd Myers and entered the Sportsman class for Sunday’s eliminations. Four rounds later he won the division when runner-up Joan Livingstone from Charlottetown “red-lit” her chances away in the final. Richard Leger from Shediac, NB was third in the class.

In the Junior Dragster Division, the division from which both Freeman racers had recently graduated, Rylie Green from Berwick, NB edged Blackville, NB’s Braxton Stafford in the final pairing. Wellington’s Brett Ramsay defeated William Newcombe from Tyne Valley to win the Junior Duck race, the class for racers who were defeated in the first round..

In the regular Duck Race, Vaughan Boone drove his other AMX car to victory when he defeated Kensington’s Donald MacLeod in his 1969 Camaro. Charlottetown’s John MacKinnon was third in the class.

In Saturday’s racing, Mark Green from Berwick, NB drove his 1969 Plymouth Road Runner to victory in the Quick Gamblers’ race with a final round win over Charlottetown’s Roy Matthews.
Moncton’s Jeff Wilson won the Second Division Gamblers’ race when he edged Colin Newman from Winsloe, PEI. Jocelyn Campbell from Cornwall earned her first win in the Junior Dragster class with a final round victory over Sunday’s winner, Rylie Green.

Next action at the park is the Harley Davison Open Bike Weekend on August 22 and 23. The ADRA returns on Labour Day and Tuesday night street drags continue weekly.

August 8-9  Report by Dave Anthony

Well we fought the weather a bit and in the end we won out. For the first time in several years we got the annual street car shootout completed on the scheduled day. After a late start on Saturday and a 1.5 hour delay late Sunday for a rather heavy shower we got the full race program completed. Special thanks for the track staff for toughing it out on Sunday, makes for a very long day

The next racing in Clarenville will be August 22/23 when we will be hosting the rescheduled 10.5 tire shootout in addition to our regular format of racing

July 18-19 Report by Earl Proude
Finally the weatherman cooperated with the Atlantic Drag Racing Association and race fans experienced an excellent field of cars and fine racing at Raceway Park in Oyster Bed Bridge over the weekend.

Dave Constable of Charlottetown arrived at the drag strip Sunday morning about 11:30, a little late. He did manage to slip his Super Pro Camaro into the back of the Pro Bracket field and get one time trial. While his competitors ran time trials and gamblers’ races on Saturday, he had been absent. Despite these apparent handicaps, Constable wheeled his way through six rounds of the largest field of Super Pro cars ever assembled at the local track, 60 cars.

In the final round Scott Sprague and his 1972 Plymouth Duster fell victim to Constable’s big block Camaro. Charles Coughlin of Wellington, PEI was third in the class when he defeated Moncton’s Chris Russell.

A perfect field of 32 Pro Bracket cars qualified for eliminations with Mike Stone’s 1988 S-10 Chevy pick-up from Moncton and Jody Gallant’s 1980 Camaro from Oyster Bed Bridge making their way to the final round. To get there, Gallant defeated the 1969 Ford Fairlane convertible of Bill Campbell and Stone sidelined Kelly MacKay’s Demon. In the final, Stone had a .512 reaction time and ran 11:76 on his 11:72 dial-in to defeat Gallant who ran right on his dial, but a .591 reaction time spelled the difference. Campbell edged MacKay for third in the class.

The next drag racing at the local track will be the fourth event in the Raceway Park points series to be held on August 8 and 9. Meanwhile, Tuesday night street drags continue weekly starting at 6:30 PM.

Island racers dominated the Bike/Sled division when three of them worked their way into the final four. Winsloe’s Glenn Frizzell drove his Arctic Cat to one quarter final victory over the eventual third place finisher, Mt. Stewart’s Joey McInnis while Oyster Bed Bridge’s Mike MacDonald drove his big Suzuki past the Yamaha motorcycle of Jason McNeil. In the final MacDonald had the better reaction time, an excellent .509, but broke out with a 9.89 on a 9.95 dial-in to hand the win to Frizzell who also broke out, but by a lesser amount.

In the Sportsman class, the 1992 Dodge Dakota of Norton, New Brunswick’s Cory Sprague earned top-eliminator honors with a final round victory over the 1989 Honda CRX of Onslow, Nova Scotia’s Lloyd Keirstead. Charlottetown’s Ray Smith took third place when he drove his 1973 Plymouth past the 1929 Chevy of Rick Middleton.

Chris Hobart of Grand Bay-Westfield, New Brunswick edged Jeremy Poole from Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia to capture Junior Dragster honors Sunday afternoon. The win capped a great weekend for the junior racer as he had won the Junior division of Saturday’s racing program with a victory over Wellington’s Brett Ramsay in the final. Catherine Delaney of Truro was third in Sunday’s large 18 car field.

Kandy Mitton’s 1994 Chevy powered Mustang dominated the 1980 Trans Am of Shediac’s Richard Leger to win Sunday afternoon’s "Duck Race" over a large field of first round losers. Daniel Collister of Tononto Road, PEI won the Junior version of the Duck Race with a victory over Lisa Carroll from Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia,

In Saturday’s action the Quick Gamblers’ race was dominated by the eventual winner, sixteen year old Jason Freeman in his 1997 S and W Dragster from Moncton, New Brunswick. In the sixth and final round he defeated Mark Green’s 1969 Plymouth Road Runner from Berwick, New Brunswick. Vaughan Boone defeated fellow Dartmouth racer, Kelly MacKay, to win the slower division of the Gamblers’ Race.
July 11-12  Report by Dave Anthony

Our 3rd weekend of racing for 2008 in the books and the weather was fantastic, very hot but humidity wasn’t an issue. So far we’re 3 for 3, getting all our events in so far this year! Even though it looks like we had 2 motors expire, sorry Willie Brewer & Joe McNeil for your very bad luck on Sunday we had zero down time for cleanups. The only thing better then the weather was the string of round wins put together by Jerry Rice in his Firebird Trans Am this weekend. He was simply unbeatable and took home the lions share of the nearly $2,000 in prize money paid out this weekend with the big $$ gamblers race on Saturday and a Super Pro win on Sunday. Interestingly enough his final round opponent on Saturday Mark Loveless did the exact same thing in 2008 only this time it was Jerry’s turn to shine. On Sunday Jerry got through the final with a win over Dean Anthony with what is becoming an extremely consistent ex Pro Mod but still blown Firebird.

July 4-5 Report
by Mitch Bonnar
Forecast was being a little less than kind to all this weekend.

I am sure, not wanting to sit in the rain, some people opted to sit at
home. We are all aware that with Drag racing being an outdoor sport
there is always the chance of foul weather.

Over the weekend I received phone calls from people in Halifax,
Yarmouth and other places. It was raining where they were cats and
dogs, but the sun was out and we were hammering down the passes.

Friday night was pretty darn hot and we time trialed till everyone had
their fill at around 9 PM or so. Then came the social tea gathering.

Saturday was great with the exception of a few busted engines,
transmissions and the like, only 1 biggie to clean up.

Both the Mansfield brothers were met by engine disasters this wekend.
That hurts.....

Speaking of hurting, we had been having the odd issue with the new
system in th AM, nothing too serious but by after lunch it was going
really ape, we are talking 500MPH passes at 3.40 sec. the works, oh
boy....and a rain shower to boot......great.....
Long story made short, after 4 hours of hair tearing, cursing, testing,
cursing, changing stuff, cursing, we got it repaired.
The Gamblers race resumed at 6:15PM. There was plenty of time, we had
it all figured, right, the final pass was at least 5-8 minuted before
dark, piece of cake.

Sunday was beautiful, 9 sharp start, no issues, plenty of time trials
and then qualifying. Everything worked perfect all day and we were
running the last pair just before 5:PM

Linda Neal was bouncing around more than normal. I discovered she had
broken 2 things this weekend. She broke into the 7's with a 7.98 and
Broke the motor doing it. Congrats on the first bit and too bad for
Pat on the last item. I am confident that will get repaired by next
race.
The volunteers did a fantastic job as usual, a sincere thank you to
all, we couldn't do it without you. Tear down was a snap too with all
the help, thanks a million.

Thanks to all the long distance travellers, we appreciate you making
the trip.

We ended up with 153 entries. Pretty darn respectable given the
weather all around. In the area of statistics, that is actually 21
more entries than the same race last year. Not bad considering the
mess the economy is in.

We will not stop enhancing the strip for the benefit of the racers and
fans, and we will not stop trying to run a race you all enjoy. Keep
showing up and we will show you.

See you all at our Aug  15th & 16th annual Points BRACKET BASH. That
will be a big one and a hoot as usual I am sure.

June 27-28  Report by Dave Anthony
Well for a weekend that was according to the weather “EXPERTS” going to be a wet one there are a lot of people today with sun burns! Goes to show that if you go to the track as planned you just might get lucky more often then not. Down side is it does keep some “weather watchers” away and reduces car counts a bit. Can’t have everything.
Anyway we had 2 great days of racing with no down time for incidents. Other then some minor issues for a couple of racers it was a very uneventful weekend.
It was nice to see Mike McDonald from PEI drop in for Sundays competition with his bike. He went a round or two and had some nice passes on his bike once he got his front brake sorted out. Little doubt that he enjoyed himself.

Regrettably our track announcer/computer operator was called away mid afternoon Saturday for a family emergency. Annette Browne filled in Saturday with Michael Morgan picking up the announcer duties. For Sunday Joey McNeil who’s car was out of service took over and handled the computer and announcing. Thanks folks for helping us out!

The results from Saturdays gamblers racing:
After 5 rounds:

Winner –      Con Dunphy – Mopar powered dragster
R/U –           Mark Loveless – 68 Camaro
Semi losers –      Joe McNeil –      Challanger

Report by Mitch Bonnar
It seems the weather around the Maritimes may have frightened some people and caused them to stay at home. With the low vehicle count I saw Friday evening I was concerned it was going to be a disaster. The track had been damp but was almost dry when the downpour came at 7PM that did it for time trials.

Saturday morning was a late 10AM start due to the dampness. We were blessed with a few down track intermittent cable gremlins which yielded the odd 300MPH pass and shaved 3-4 10th’s off the ET on the left lane. Looks pretty cool on the time slip but kinda sucks if you were actually trying to win a race. We eventually solved that issue and racing we go.

There were 3 engines and transmissions that grenaded all over the track to tally up to about 2 + hours of cleanup and sucked up most of the cache of floor dry ..…..loll We were determined to finish and that we did somewhere around 8 PM

It was Henk Niesten’s 70th birthday and it was planned to do the birthday cake thing at the BBQ put on by the ADRA at the end of racing.
Unfortunately because of the race finishing in the middle of his nap time we had to send in a mole to tell a fib, something about a very important drivers meeting, to Rosa to get them to get out of their Jammies and come
to the BBQ. Henk was very surprised and liked the cake. He told me he thought we were going to tell him that because of the way thing went today that we were only going to get 1 time trial on Sunday. He was relieved to find that was not true. Happy Birthday Henk !!

Sunday was sunny and warm, great day for racing…….until 9:30 when it clouded over and wet the track, here we go again…….1/2 hour later we were back at it. Because of the possibility of more dampness we changed up the order of running of the classes. It made it a bit confusing for some
(mostly me) but the day went without a hitch.

The final round of S/P was a bit of a shame. Danny “Hollywood” Walker had thrashed his way into the final round only to have a caliper come apart
which resulted in complete brake failure. He pulled the chute and the pea gravel at the end of the strip did it’s job and stopped the rail in 30
feet. Very little damage to the car but I suspect the drivers seat will need a good washing. Danny’s demise gave the win to Barrett Bonnar with a
50 MPH last pass of the day at about 5:30PM.

The volunteers and the ADRA did a great job again, thank you, and it started raining again at 7PM or so. Quite a weekend indeed. We ended up
with 180 entries. With all the new pavment it didn't look like that many vehicles.

See you all at our Points Meet on July 4th and 5th

June 13-14  Report by Dave Anthony

Well I finally get to make my first report of the year and the good news is we had racing albeit on Sunday only. For the first weekend we had an excellent turnout of cars it looks like we’re going to have a great season based on the interest shown. Saturday started off very wet, as in monsoon like rain but it eventually stopped and we opened the track for test and tune by mid afternoon so everyone could get their rigs sorted out for Sunday. Several new cars were at the track; the highlight being Dean Anthony’s blown ex Pro Mod Firebird that he bought last fall. With the minimum amount of boost and hitting the rev limiter due to too much gear  he ran a best of 8.54 @ 159 and went several rounds on Sunday, car was rock solid. All in all a very good weekend for Dean.

Not to be outdone Dave Powell Sr. is back with the T Bird with a Powerglide replacing the Lenco and Dave got down to a best of 8.39 @ 164.65. These two will have some close heads up encounters before the season is over.

Dave Powell Jr. was there with the Cougar but the track was a little too green and he made a couple of mid 8 second passes covering the ¼ in about ½ a mile!

Oh and yes, we actually had racing on Sunday running a Super Pro/Pro combo. After 5 rounds of racing Gerry Rice in his Trans Am came out on top with a win over the Sinnott brothers blown Chevy SS pickup. Con Dunphy picked up 3rd place in his dragster. Bobby Madigan in his Chevy II won the consolation race. Lastly the track record was reset by a certain yellow dragster that is for sale when it motored to a 6.91 @ 195.14 pass, only took 5 years but man was it worth the wait!
That’s it for now next racing in 2 weeks June 27/28.

Drag Racing Report from Raceway Park, Oyster Bed Bridge, PEI

Some of the Maritimes’ best drag racers converged at Raceway Park on the weekend to compete in the first of five PEI Drag Racing Points Events. The weather was great and the competition was furious.

Charlottetown’s Dave Constable drove his 1969 big-block Chevy Camaro to first place in the Super Pro category with a final round victory over the always tough veteran, Ray Roach, from Saint John, New Brunswick. Charlottetown’s Bruce Howatt finished third in his 68 Road Runner when he defeated Lonny Wright’s 1986 Mustang from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

In the Pro Bracket final Greg Gillis and his 1973 Dodge Challenger from Margaree Harbour, Nova Scotia proved to be too much for Kensington, PEI’s Jason Coulson in his 1981 Malibu. Charlottetown’s Travis Livingstone was third in the class with a victory over Kelly MacKay from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

In the Bike/Sled class, two snowmobiles faced off for top-eliminator honours. Summerside’s Dave Wooldridge drove his Yamaha past Winsloe, PEI’s Glen Frizzell and his Arctic Cat in a very close final. Wooldridge had a .501 light, coupled with a 9.80 elapsed time on a 9.78 dial-in to edge Frizzell, who had a .570 light and ran 10.22 on a 10.19 dial. The 1992 Honda motorcycle of Joey MacInnis was third in the class when he lost to Wooldride in the semi-final.
Matt MacLean from Hunter River, PEI won the Sportsman division in his 1991 Camaro by virtue of his final round victory over Charlottetown’s Ray Smith. Darren Boutilier from Stratford, PEI finished third by defeating Richard Leger from Shediac, NB.

A "Second Time Good" class for all racers who were put out in the first round was captured by Shawn Livingatone of Miscouche, PEI in his 1974 Plymouth. He defeated Mike Ervin’s 1986 S-10 Chevy from Grand Bay, NB in the final. Bill Campbell from Moncton was third in the class.

The Junior Dragster division was also busy on the weekend with eliminations on Saturday and Sunday. On both days Wellington, PEI’s Brett Ramsay used a string of great reaction times to capture the class honours. On Saturday he defeated Brad Daye from Grand Bay, NB in the final and on Sunday he did the same to Tyne Valley’s William Newcombe. On Saturday Newcombe ended up third and on Sunday Kevin Gallant of Summerside did the same.

In Saturday’s Gamblers’ Races, which also coumted for points, Carl Toombs from Mayfield, PEI defeated Grand Bay, NB’s Mark Daye and his 1965 Chevy II in the Division I final.

In Division II, Charlottetown’s Travis Livingstone disappointed Donald MacLeod from Kensington by edging him in the final.

Next action at the local drag strip is June 13/14 when the Sport Compacts invade the park and again on July 4/5 when the second points event will take place. Meanwhile the Tuesday Night Street Drags begin this week and should provide local car enthusiasts with a better place than the province’s highways to see how fast their cars will go.

Report by Mitch Bonnar
What a long winter that was but at the same time because of my usual
procrastination I found myself thrashing and beating to get ready.
Piece of cake, made with 1 day to spare, better than last year...lol

With all new race software and hardware for 2009 some of us were
feeling, let's say, a bit uneasy. Doug spent numerous hours with this
stuff all hooked up in his living room this winter so he was not too
worried. It is not without issues but so far it is much better than
the old stuff. Wow, ladders seem to be a a snap so far and we can even
ladder more than a 64 car field, that will be a first in Eastern
Canada.

The new announcer program is a wonderful tool. Now that is working we
need all racers to fill in their vehicle info, sponsors and
accomplishments. We can and will be talking about that during the
runs. We can even look back and tell the fans about your previous
history. Makes it much more interesting for the fans and your sponsors
will now get mentioned numerous times a weekend.

Oh yeah, the racing. Friday setup took more time than usual with the
new gear but we were up and running by 6'ish for time trials. There
were 156 entries, most of which arrived Friday.

Saturday was beautiful with temps somewhere in the high 20's low
30's...gees had to take my jacket off there at one point. There were
no major breakages or mishaps and the Box, No-Box, Jr. Dragster
gamblers race went with only a couple minor hitches. The biggest one
was when one of the vendors decided to go into the UNLOCKED power shed
and start flicking breakers on and off, killing the tower
............oh boy.......20 minutes later we were back in business.
Two lessons were learned from that experience. 1. LOCK the damn shed
2. Buy a UPS for the computers and lan links. That will solve that
little problem.
The NSDRA and Tri-Star Racing each threw an additional $ 100 into the
gamblers pot just to make it more interesting. The results form
Saturday
are as follows:

Box
1st Tommie Vickery 831 Yarmouth - took out Barrett with a perfect .500 and
ran on his dial with a 3, hard to wiggle out of that one. Congrats Tommie,
well deserved win.
2nd John Croft 406 Blockhouse
3rd Barrett Bonnar 186E Yarmouth

No Box
1st Jeremy Keens 103 Brooklyn
2nd Aaron Jodrey Maitland
3rd Vaughn Boone 390 Dartmouth

Jr Dragster
1st Lisa Carroll JR373 Sherbrooke
2nd Courtney Munroe JR1044 SackvilleI awoke Sunday AM at 6:30 to a beautiful sunny day. An hour later it
all went to pot. By 8 it was raining. No fear it was only a shower....
Right...by looking at all the available data it became obvious we were
not likely to get many if any passes in, we called the race at
11:30AM. It stopped raining at 12:30, oh,oh, what have I done, I say
to myself. It is always a risk to call or not call a race but as it
turned out, we got it right, as it only dried to a useable condition
for 1/2 hour at 2:30 before it rained again then dried again only to
downpour minutes later to finish the track off.

Here is the list of Sunday winners:

All vehicles entries that we have a completed Tech card for the Sunday
event win a discount for their vehicle / driver entry fee at our NEXT
scheduled event. The discount is as follows:

S/P $30    Reduction
Pro $25    Reduction
SM $20     Reduction
B/S $20    Reduction
Jr.D's $10 Reduction

See you all at the next event on Jun 13th & 14th It is a Points meet & and
an ADRA event. It promises to be a good one.
